## A Stroll Through Time: Discovering Holland, Michigan's Centennial Park

Centennial Park, nestled in the heart of Holland, Michigan, is more than just a green space; it's a living testament to the city's rich history and community spirit. Located between 10th and 12th Streets and River and Central Avenues, this 5.6-acre park offers a tranquil escape with a fascinating story to tell.

Originally designated as the village market square, Centennial Park was transformed and dedicated to public enjoyment in 1876, coinciding with the nation's centennial celebration. This historical significance is woven into the very fabric of the park, evident in its charming features and evolving landscape.

A prominent landmark within the park is the rustic 20-foot rock fountain, a generous gift from Dutch immigrant Teunis TenHouten in 1902. Designed and constructed by Johannes Van Lente, the fountain serves as a beautiful reminder of Holland's strong Dutch heritage.

The park's unique character continued to develop in the early 20th century. Underground restrooms, an innovative feature for the time, were added in 1904, and a charming bandstand was constructed atop them in 1907. Imagine the lively concerts and community gatherings that have taken place under its roof over the years!

Fast forward to 1988, when Mayor Philip Tanis spearheaded the "Buy-a-Brick" campaign. This community-driven initiative resulted in the beautiful brick-paved walkways that meander through the park today, each brick representing a piece of Holland's collective pride.

The park's Victorian charm was further enhanced in 1991 with the addition of a picturesque gazebo, a contribution from the Holland Area Home Builders Association. That same year, Victorian-style lighting was installed throughout the park, casting a warm and inviting glow and solidifying Centennial Park's identity as a timeless Victorian oasis.

Today, Centennial Park continues to serve as a vital hub for community life in Holland. Whether you're seeking a peaceful retreat, a place to connect with nature, or a glimpse into the city's vibrant past, Centennial Park offers a delightful experience for visitors of all ages. Come and discover the stories whispered through the rustling leaves and etched in the stones of this beloved Holland landmark.
